● Exercise 1: (10pts.) Circles with rhythm, tension, and balance
● Exercise 2: (10pts.) Again looking at rhythm, tension, and balance create 9 compositions, this time using only lines.
● Exercise 3: (10pts.) Again looking at rhythm, tension, and balance create 9 compositions, this time using lines AND dots.
● Exercise 4: (10pts.) Building on what you’ve learned about making meaning from form in the previous 3 exercises, convey the 3 action words of your story using any combination of lines and circles. One composition for each of your 3 words.
● Exercise 5: (10pts.) Place your found letter forms in an Illustrator file. On another layer, trace the letterforms EXACTLY using the pen tool. If there is a counter space, create a compound path of the two forms. Have three letters completed in total, could be diff letters, could be same letter but in a diff. style. (1-3 letters, B&W, vector)
● Exercise 6: (10pts.) Draw a well balanced expertly executed 2-dimensional translation of your object, to strike the right balance of legibility and abstraction. This can be a volumetric translation or 2D icon. Use variations of live traces or image manipulations in Photoshop as visual research to inform your design decisions. (1 translation, B&W vector)
● Exercise 7: (10pts.) Experiment with at least 5 different “effects” on mass media images. Compile findings in a PDF that is easy and quick to flip through with instructor.
Note: Unless otherwise noted, all compositions are 7.5″ square in black & white. When saved for the website submission at 72 dpi (to submit on class site), the jpg image file size will be 540 px x 540 px.
